Washington, D.C.- Representatives Walter B. Jones of North Carolina and Sherrod Brown of Ohio will host a bipartisan event tomorrow to highlight the broad and deep opposition to the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA), scheduled for a vote later this week. At the 10:30 am. news conference on the West Lawn of the Capitol, more than two dozen House Republicans and Democrats will gather to express their opposition to CAFTA.

“I think we all want trade with the countries of Central America. But trade will not work unless it’s fair—fair for Central America and fair for American workers,” Jones said. “This trade agreement is flawed.”

Since April 2005, more than 1,000 people have gathered on Capitol Hill to speak out against the agreement. Tuesday's news conference will reunite the same members of Congress and grassroots organizations. The event also will include new opposition to the agreement.

In addition to the strong bipartisan coalition against CAFTA, the lawmakers will be joined by representatives from faith-based organizations, business and labor groups, family farmers and ranchers, environmental and human rights organizations and more.

Other Members of Congress joining Reps. Jones and Brown include Rep. Hilda Solis (D-CA), Rep. Virgil Goode (R-VA), Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz (D-FL), Rep. Collin Peterson (D-MN), Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA), Rep. Butch Otter (R-ID), Rep. Bart Stupak (D-MI), Rep. Janice Schakowsky (D-IL), Rep. Xavier Becerra (D-CA) and others.
